Sir David Attenborough has said that pop music appeals to young people because it is “hugely sexual”.

Speaking to Björk as part of the Attenborough and Björk: The Nature of Music documentary which aired on C4 on Saturday (July 27), Attenborough drew a link between people’s love of pop music and being at their sexual peak.

Asked how he thinks music works in the present day, Attenborough said: “Well, one thing is absolutely clear, and that is the sexuality. And as it were in classical times, troubadours singing up to their lady loves up on the balcony, ‘Come and join me or let me come in’.”

Explaining his idea, Attenborough continued: “But in our own culture now, I mean pop music is hugely sexual, there can’t be any doubt about that. And that is why it is so popular amongst people between 15 and 30. That’s the peak of sexuality and it’s the peak of the passion about music.”

Attenborough and Björk: The Nature of Music, directed by Louise Hooper, sees Björk explore humans’ unique relationship with music and how technology might transform the way we engage with it in the future. It aired as part of Channel 4’s Mad4Music season, a series of films films that challenge the way we hear and think about music.

Bjork’s multimedia ‘Biophilia’ project features strongly in the film as Attenborough shows how music exists in the natural world, using footage of the lyre bird, reed warbler and blue whales.
