Oscars 2014: Music stars muscle in on Academy Awards glory – The Independent

The nominations for best music at this year’s Oscars are star-studded, with Pharrell Williams and Karen O also up for gongs. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman is up for Best Original Song for “Moon Song”, written for and inspired by Her and performed by Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson in the film. She is up against Williams, soon to release GIRL, his first solo album in eight years, for his No 1 hit “Happy”, which he wrote for Despicable Me 2.

Looking down the list of 2014 Oscars-nominated films, there are others with outstanding soundtracks – although overlooked in the music-award categories. Set in the early-1960s Greenwich Village folk scene, the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis features a soundtrack compiled by T Bone Burnett, the producer behind the eight-million-selling O Brother, Where Art Thou? album. Among its 12 new recordings of acoustic roots songs made especially for the film and soundtrack, Marcus Mumford performs a new arrangement of the folk song «Fare Thee Well» (Dink’s Song) with actor and musician Oscar Isaac. Much of the soundtrack was recorded live on set, performed by Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and Isaac. The other stand-out soundtrack that could have earned a few nods for Best Original Song is The Great Gatsby, whose executive producer Jay Z stars alongside Lana del Rey, Florence and The Machine,, The xx, The Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie and Nero, all recording original new music for the film.

It signifies how many names in rock and pop are contributing songs to film soundtracks. More and more rock and pop musicians are branching into film soundtracks. While Nick Cave has been at it since the 1990s, other successful rock and pop musicians turned film scorers are Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, whose Academy Award-winning success scoring films has led to him scoring David Fincher’s forthcoming adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel Gone Girl, and Radiohead’s classically-trained Jonny Greenwood, who has soundtracked several high profile films including Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood and The Master. More recently, Jon Hopkins scored the Saiorse Ronan-starring How I Live Now, penning a track, “Garden’s Heart”, alongside Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Khan. Rufus Wainwright and John Bramwell have also suggested film composing is in the pipeline.

For many musicians, it’s the next step in their career; some who have been in a band for many years may be tired of touring and making records and are keen to stretch themselves. Andy Burrows, who performed as Razorlight’s drummer for many years, and has since turned solo artist/collaborator with Editors’ Tom Smith, turned to film scoring when he was approached by Channel 4 to help write the music for The Snowman and the Snowdog animation.

“Rock and pop musicians are having to broaden their horizons and become more versatile,” Burrows tells me. “The record industry is shrinking, so there have to be other ways to earn a living. I think film-score composing is probably the first, most exciting thing. It also involves zero touring which is always appealing.” He welcomed the ready-made inspiration that comes with scoring a film. “The main difference was that there was something to write for – an inspiration already in place. That’s quite a relief for any songwriter I think – not having to tear your heart out, or bare your soul, to give a song purpose.”

But it’s a very different discipline, warns music supervisor Matt Biffa, who has helmed the music for Snatch and Harry Potter, worked alongside Graham Coxon on Fresh Meat, and is working on the upcoming film Posh by Lone Scherfig, based on a play by Laura Wade. “The thing about working with artists on films is that the discipline is different. When you’re in a band the only people you’re writing for are the band members whereas when you’re doing film or TV you’re at the mercy of the producers, director, editor… and all have an opinion. It’s such a different discipline and I think it’s more difficult than people imagine. I’ve been in situations where quite well-known artists have really objected to the way they’ve been treated. Film people are quite heavy-handed sometimes. You need to be thick-skinned.”

Securing an artist with a several million following such as Pharrell Williams onto the soundtrack is going to attract certain attention to the film. Likewise employing Jay Z, for The Great Gatsby.

“You have to check your motives are pure”, warns Biffa of picking celebrity musicians for the sake of commercial value. “Trent Reznor and Jonny Greenwood have done it very successfully. These people have a ready-made audience and when it’s done right you get incredible creative results. You’re helping the director tell the story.

“Jay Z on The Great Gatsby is a coup. The film rubs off on the artist and an artist rubs off on a film. It’s cross-pollination on social networks. You get access to five million people on Twitter who become aware of the film simply because they follow. I’m sure Spike Jonze is doing it because it’s making a valid artistic contribution to the film. But I have suspected motives – ‘we’ll get Billy Corgan or Damon Albarn’. The question is, why did you want them so much? Because you want a valid creative experience or just the added commercial value that they bring?”

The soundtracks to teen films are becoming as important as the films themselves. It’s also no longer about just making a compilation of old songs. It’s about creating a new exciting album that’s as anticipated as the film itself.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack had indie-rock songs by Coldplay and The National, and electro-pop from Ellie Goulding, that were exclusive to that release. The upcoming soundtrack to teen film Divergent, out on 4 April, is equally anticipated, its 16-song tracklist including never-before-heard tracks from rapper Kendrick Lamar, dreamy indie-pop from M83, Banks, and Ellie Goulding.

Judging the music categories for future Oscars is only going to get harder.

Katy Perry ‘Dark Horse’ music video edited after causing Muslims offence – The Independent

The US pop star caused offence to some Muslims who claimed her latest video was «blasphemous». In one scene, a man wearing an “Allah” pendant is struck by lightning and disintegrates into sand.

While the music video has not been pulled in its entirety, the pendant has been cut so that only a plain gold chain can now be seen (as above). It remains unclear whether YouTube edited the video or was told to by the singer’s record company as both parties have yet to comment.

Shazad Iqbal who started the petition originally wrote: «Blasphemy is clearly conveyed in the video since Katy Perry – who appears to be representing an opposition of God – engulfs the believer and the word «God» in flames.»

He went on to argue that using the name of God in an «irrelevant and distasteful manner» would be deemed inappropriate by any religion, not just Islam.

Iqbal was «thrilled» with the result of his petition. «The name of Allah has been removed from the «Dark Horse» video – we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support so I thank each and every one of you deeply, our voices have been heard,» he wrote.

«I feel that the impact we have made and the total number of signatures obtained does convey just how worthy a cause this is, it is a significant step towards the right direction.»

Perry is seen dressed as an Ancient Egyptian princess in the «Dark Horse» video, which also features bizarre cat-human hybrids pole-dancing.

More than 37 million people have viewed the video on YouTube since it was uploaded on 20 February.

Ingenious invests in ‘electronic music discovery’ site –

Emerging Ibiza (E.I.) has announced today that it has successfully raised seed funding from Ingenious Ventures, to support its ambition to become the world’s No1 platform for Electronic Music discovery.

E.I. will combine online recommendations with a season of live events in Ibiza to ‘enable Electronic Music fans to discover the hottest, brightest and best new Electronic Music Artists the world has to offer’.

Emerging Ibiza features a panel of Electronic Music execs including ViVa Music label chief, DJ & producer Steve Lawler, DJ, & Circus Recordings head Yousef, and industry experts Pete Tong, Ben Turner and Danny Whittle from IMS. 

Each of these figures will recommend selected tracks or mixes from up to three emerging artists on the E.I. website, creating playlists that are accompanied by video introductions.

After the Festival, the eight most popular E.I. artists (judged both online and at the E.I Break-Thru Festival) will be invited back to Ibiza for a month-long residency during the Emerging Ibiza Summer Season of Events, held between June and September.

Meet one of JJJ‘s favorite bands – Plug in Stereo!

The 20-year-old singer Trevor Dahl dropped his latest EP A Little Peace last month and we haven’t stopped listening to it!

His newest single “To Be Wanted” is heavy on our rotation, as it also features our faves Megan & Liz!

Trevor recently wrapped up a tour with Cody Simpson and is gearing up to hit the road with Before You Exit next month.

We caught up with Plug in Stereo to learn more about his music, where he draws inspiration, and more! He even gave us a peek at his current playlist!

Click inside to read our interview with Plug in Stereo Interview – Plug in Stereo When did you realize you wanted to pursue music as a career and how did you get discovered?

Trevor Dahl: Music has always been a big thing in my life, even before I was playing it. My dad, uncle and cousins were always playing instruments and singing songs they have written, and it always really interested me. One of the oldest memories I have is from when I was probably 5 or 6 years old, and I watched That Thing You Do (with Tom Hanks) for the first time and I think it was the first time I ever saw a “band” get on stage and play in front of a crowd. I ran and grabbed some random boxes that my family had laying around in the garage, along with a pair of wooden spoons, and I set them up like it was a drum set in front of the TV. I kept rewinding it over and over trying to play the boxes along with the music.

I was instantly hooked with the idea of being able to create something special and share it with groups of people. So I started writing poems/lyrics in elementary school, started playing instruments and playing in bands in middle school, and then decided to really take it seriously in high school. I dropped out after my sophomore year of high school and started touring when I was 16. Ever since then I’ve just been writing music, touring, building up a fan base and enjoying myself. I don’t know if there was a point when I was discovered, or if I’m even discovered yet. I just keep taking steps towards my goals, and it’s all a gradual thing. I just try to be thankful for everything I have, but always keep thriving to do better.

JJJ: Wow, that’s amazing! Who were some of your musical biggest influences growing up and how has your taste evolved over the years?

TD: My mom loves the Beatles and my dad loves Bob Dylan, so those two have always been big influences in my life. Tracy Chapman and Michael Jackson we’re also very popular at my house and on road trips. In middle school I went through a HUGE pop/punk phase and I was obsessed with bands like Blink 182, New Found Glory, Zebrahead, etc. but eventually I began to shy away from that music and started really getting into bands like The Shins and Modest Mouse, as well as singer/songwriters like John Mayer, Taylor Swift, and Colbie Callait/Jason Reeves. I’ve always liked most types of music though, whether its hip hop, country, blues, etc. so I enjoy and get inspired by a lot of different styles.

JJJ: We love your taste, as well as your latest EP. What would you say is the most personal song to you on that, and why?

TD: Thanks so much! I’m glad ya guys like it. The most personal song is probably “Home Soon” because I talk about a lot specific things that I miss about home whenever I’m on the road. It touches on a lot of personal aspects of my life, and I think it gives people a better idea of who I am.

JJJ: We hear you’ve been writing songs since you were very young. How do you narrow it down and figure out which songs make the cut?

TD: It can be very tough sometimes! I usually spend quite a bit of time writing and recording my songs, so by the time I’m done with a song, it means a lot to me. Although, when it comes time to pick my songs for an EP or album, I listen through all the potential songs and it ends up being pretty obvious to me which ones I’m really stoked on. So I just try to pick a batch of music that is cohesive but I also want each song to make the listener feel a different way. I usually don’t like listening to albums where you can’t tell when one songs ends and the next begins. There always ends up being one or two that I really want to release but can’t fit on the track-listing, so we just try to think of creative ways to release other songs.

JJJ: What is your songwriting process like? What kind of experiences typically inspire you the most?

TD: It tends to vary depending on situation. My most comfortable writing situation is writing by myself in my studio room at my house. I’ve been doing it since I was 12, so it’s just what I’m used to doing and I like being able to experiment with different production ideas. I like writing with other people as well, and there are a few people that I really connect with stylistically and personally so it’s always fun to blend ideas together and see how other people put songs together. I seem to be most inspired to write by bad/sad things that happen to me or someone I’m close to. Writing began as way for me to express myself and get my thoughts organized, so it’s always really helped not just as an artistic outlet, but as a personal outlet as well.

JJJ: You’ve were on tour with Cody Simpson last month. Any fun off-stage moments you can share?

TD: We didn’t get a huge amount of time to hang out because everyone is so busy during the shows, but I stayed on Cody’s bus one of the nights to write music with him and his guitarist, Andrew. We had a good time! All the guys in his crew are rad dudes. We made a Wal-mart stop and we all went inside to grab snacks for the long drive. It involved some of us dancing around the store and singing to the workers. Then we watched Rush Hour too, which is a classic. It was Cody’s first time ever seeing it, which I thought was crazy!

JJJ: That is crazy! So how else do you pass the time between shows?

TD: I spend a lot of my time with music. I love writing and producing for myself or other artists. I also recently started something called Dahlhouse Music Group where I’m going to help develop bands/artists. I also try to stay active on the internet! So those things take up a lot of my time. But when I have extra time, I love hiking/camping, traveling, playing with my two little dogs, and just hanging out with family/friends.

JJJ: What’s on your playlist rotation right now?

TD: “Let It Be” by The Beatles. It has a such a simple and powerful message. Paul McCartney is one of my favorite songwriters. He adds the perfect amount of description into his songs, I love it. The instrumentation and melodies are amazing too. I think every songwriter strives to write songs like that.

Annie Clark, aka St Vincent, surprised fans last December with a new single Birth in Reverse, which featured the line: «Oh what an ordinary day, take out the garbage, masturbate.» Shortly thereafter, a salacious video for Miley Cyrus‘s Adore materialised, in which the singer runs a sly hand down her body to signify that she too will procure her own pleasure – a routine she’s also decided to play up on her current Bangerz tour. Not long after Adore appeared online, Nicki Minaj sneaked up on fans by releasing a remix of the song Boss Ass Bitch and from it sprung the words: «It’s a holiday, playing with my pussy day.» Most recently, on Valentine’s Day, Minaj said on her new single Lookin Ass N*gga that she has no use for unworthy men. In none of these instances is masturbation presented as titillating, prurient or provocative. It is normal and routine.

In a carnally confident style akin to Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein yowling through Sleater-Kinney’s Let’s Call It Love, or PJ Harvey lasciviously panting, «Lick my legs! I’m on fire!» on Rid of Me, female pleasure in popular music is making a libertine – albeit cooler-headed – return. When female rappers and R&B icons of the 90s and early 00s used this method (Tweet’s Oops Oh My, Janet Jackson’s Take Care and Lil’ Kim’s Queen Bitch to name a smutty few), it was a powerful tool which pushed back on the idea that women needed men. But in 2014, the shock value of a woman masturbating – at least as a lyrical device – has at last begun to depreciate. It is no longer an act of flirty deviance to be monetised; it is merely normalised. Sure, Cyrus almost certainly knew the Adore You video would spark a prudish outcry, but it’s still the least flashy thing she’s done of late. Similar is the «DIY» T-shirt Rihanna sported last May, which showed a woman masturbating. With it Rihanna wore a long skirt and a toque. If the point was to be seen, it was also: «And so what?»

While female pleasure in music is nothing new, the shift that has appeared is largely based around an absence of the man: take for example Janet Jackson’s Take Care, where she sings: «I’ll lay here and take care of it ‘til you come home to me.» For Jackson, masturbation is a bookmark. The Divinyls’ I Touch Myself – a pro-masturbation anthem if ever there was one – contains the line: «I’d get down on my knees, I’d do anything for you.» When it came out in 1990 it was intrepid. But the song is just as much about giving pleasure as getting it.

In a 2011 interview with CNN, Kathleen Hanna, feminist leader of Bikini Kill and now the Julie Ruin, questioned the purpose of Katy Perry’s sexual presentation on Perry’s 2008 debut single I Kissed a Girl. «The whole thing is like, ‘I kissed a girl so my boyfriend could masturbate about it later,’ said Hanna. «It’s disgusting. St Vincent, Cyrus and Minaj don’t fight for the right to pleasure, they just do it and they do it themselves. Until this point, most lyrics on the subject of female masturbation have undermined and corrected the illusion that pleasure can’t be DIY. Now the message is that pleasure still exists when pleasure is self-serving.

Get this Google Music Mac app before Google’s lawyers find it – CNET

An intrepid developer has created a free Google Music desktop app for OS X, borrowing the Google Music name and logo in the process. You shouldn’t have to Google «trademark law» to understand that Google’s legal department may be readying a letter to Sajid Anwar, the developer who maintains the app or Jame Fator, its creator. On Hacker News, some have reasoned that such a blatant use of Google’s trademarks has to mean the developers seek Google’s attention so that their app or they themselves may get acquired by Google.

Whatever the reason behind its development, the Google Music for Mac is available on GitHub at the time of this writing. The app is actually a custom stylesheet that emulates the appearance of a native OS X application. It is unquestionably slick. It mimics the look and feel of the Google Music Web app, complete with the same buttons and controls and settings, and yes, the Google Play name and logo at the top, while adding a useful feature you don’t get with the Web app: support for your
Mac‘s media keys.

Using the Google Music for Mac app lets you play/pause, fast-forward, and rewind tracks using the keys at the top of your Mac’s keyboard, which means you can control the action without leaving your current window or tab. This feature alone makes the app worth the download. And on my 2011
MacBook Pro laptop, I found that the desktop app was much more responsive than the Web app.

While you get the same music labs settings with the desktop app that you do with the Web app — the ability to enable desktop notifications, HTML5 audio, ratings, comments, and the Chromecast Fireplace Visualizer — there are two themes to choose from available in Google Music > Preferences from the menu bar. When the box is checked for «Emulate native application appearance,» the top banner makes the app look more like a Mac app. When it’s unchecked (and after restarting the app), the top banner of the app looks like what you are accustomed to with the Google Music Web app.

It’s too bad you can’t choose a theme that gets rid of the Google Play logo and changes the wording to «Guugle Play» or somesuch that may keep Google’s lawyers at bay a while longer.

Google Music for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.8 or later and Adobe’s Flash Player.

Here’s a Sneak Peek of the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards… Let the Voting … – Huffington Post

We all know that the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards are going to be awesome. They’re going to be BIG, unbelievable, insane, magical — wondertastic. (I know that last one isn’t a real word, but it’s true!) From the show to the special on the Disney Channel, to all of the scheduled performers, to my Duck Tape dress (I’ll get to that later) — on April 26th, your mind will be blown.

As one half of the morning show, «Morgan & Maddy in the Morning» on Radio Disney, I know all of the juicy details about the RDMAs. Let me get you up to speed.

Let’s start with the show itself. The 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards is kids and families’ biggest awards show for music. It celebrates music and the year’s favorite artists as voted by us — the fans. Seeing our favorite stars accept their Ardys is going to be life-changing in itself, but it wouldn’t be the Radio Disney Music Awards without performances. Here’s a rundown of the artists we have scheduled to perform SO FAR.

R5, who’s currently touring the globe and killing it on their Louder Tour. Fifth Harmony, the girls who not only have amazing voices and hair-bows, but are also opening for Demi Lovato on her Neon Lights Tour. Zendaya, whose song, «Replay» just went platinum, and Becky G, our N.B.T. featured artist that is a 100 percent better rapper than I am and works with amazing artists like Cody Simpson and Pitbull. Do I have your attention now? Of course I do.

Speaking of (good segue, Maddy, good segue), that is just one of the places you can go to vote. You can also Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and text your vote by texting RDMA to DISNEY (347639). It’s always been a dream of mine to walk the red carpet at the Radio Disney Music Awards in a custom dress made of Duck Tape. OK, so I’ve never actually had that dream, but now that it’s really happening, it seems like a dream come true! However, before this dream becomes reality, a lot of work has to happen. From sketching and designing, to choosing a color palate, to multiple fittings to make sure the dress fits, all I can say is I’m glad that I get to wear it and I don’t have to make it. If they asked me to make it, I would probably end up looking like a Duck Tape burrito.

From what I’ve seen so far, the dress is going to be extravagant, and I’m so excited to see the final product.

Let’s recap. The 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards are happening on Saturday, April 26th at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE. R5, Fifth Harmony, Zendaya, Becky G and more are performing and it’s going to rock. I will also be there wearing a dress made of Duck Tape and I am oh-so excited about it.

Like I said, the 2014 Radio Disney Music awards are going to be WONDERIFIC. That may not be a real word, but it makes total sense now, right?

Voting will begin Friday, February 28 (7:30 a.m., ET) through Sunday, April 6 at, and via Radio Disney’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles or by texting RDMA to Disney (347639).

Winners will be announced at the Radio Disney Music Awards, a live event featuring musical performances and today’s hottest stars among youth, Saturday, April 26 at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE. «Disney Channel Presents The Radio Disney Music Awards,» a television special originating from the event, will be presented Sunday, April 27 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on the Disney Channel.

Katy Perry causes offence by burning ‘Allah’ pendant in new music video – The Independent

More than 50,000 Muslims have pledged their support for the video to be removed because of an offending scene, which shows an Islamic necklace burned by lightning shot from Perry’s fingers.

Shazad Iqbal of Bradford, West Yorkshire, who started the petition, said the burning of the pendant with the Arabic word for God was «blasphemous» and «distasteful». 

“At 01.15 into the video ‘Dark Horse’, a man is shown being burned, whilst wearing a pendant (also burned) forming the word ‘Allah’, which is the Arabic word for God,” Iqbal wrote.

“Such goes to show, that blasphemy is clearly conveyed in the video, since Katy Perry (who appears to be representing an opposition of God) engulfs the believer and the word God in flames.”

He added: “Using the name of God in an irrelevant and distasteful manner would be considered inappropriate by any religion.”

Most signatures so far have come from Britain, but people from Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have also entered into the debate.

“Absolutely disgusted at the music industry for allowing this to happen,” wrote Bilal Khan from Birmingham. “Music should be about spreading love not hate.”

Faeezah Shaik from South Africa also commented: “Artists should consider the impact their ‘art’ would have on society and not just go ahead and do things for the sake of being controversial.”

Perry is also seen pole-dancing with bizarre cat-human bodyguards in her latest video, which has amassed over 30 million views.

The US pop star grew up in a devout Christian home as both her parents were traveling Pentecostal ministers. She started her career singing Christian Gospel music before deciding to change track.

Perry recently told Marie Claire that she now has no identification with any religion or “old man sitting on a throne” but still feels “a deep connection with God”.

It is not the first time Perry has been criticised for her portrayal of other cultures. She received a strong backlash for her ‘Japanese’ performance of “Unconditionally” at the American Music Awards last November.

Other singers to be accused of cultural insensitivity include Lily Allen, whose video “Hard Out Here” was labelled racist because of the twerking black backing dancers

Rihanna was also ordered to leave an Abu Dhabi mosque last year after compromising the “sanctity of the site” by posing for a photoshoot.

Perry seems to have no qualms about her controversial behaviour, as she recently attended Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz tour and enjoyed a front row kiss with the “Wrecking Ball” singer.

Bullies almost forced me to quit Royal College of Music, says soprano Laura … –

“Every day of the last two years of my course I considered quitting. I’d have
low points thinking, ‘Why am I doing this? I’m not happy’. There was a lack
of support from the conservatoire.

“I can deal with bullies, but it was a shame there wasn’t much support for
what I was doing. I wanted to represent [the college] and be proud to do so.
But I got a first and was very proud of that.”

A Royal College of Music spokesman said: “We are sorry Laura feels she wasn’t
supported. We are very proud of Laura, and regularly celebrated her many
achievements in our magazine.

“We have an exceedingly firm policy that bullying will not be tolerated. Laura
didn’t bring this issue to our attention.”

Ms Wright is due to sing God Save The Queen at the England v Wales match at
Twickenham on March 9.

The rugby-playing soprano, who sang the National Anthem ahead of England’s Six
Nations clash with Ireland at Twickenham has revealed that she has been on
the receiving end of mocking renditions of the anthem from rival players
during matches for her club Rosslyn Park.
